Why choose commercial air handling units?
Whether it's a busy leisure centre, a commercial swimming pool or a prestigious art gallery, different spaces have different demands. A leisure centre may want to keep temperatures cool for those working out, whereas a gallery needs to control humidity to preserve priceless artwork.
While it is possible to regulate conditions throughout a large facility using a single system per room, this can be costly to set up and run, especially in hotels where a single building can house hundreds of individual rooms.
Air handling units (AHUs) are large systems capable of delivering highly efficient whole-building climate control on a per-room basis throughout commercial facilities.
By handling air quality in large spaces, alongside temperature and humidity, AHUs work to minimise energy consumption and operating costs, all while creating a comfortable, healthy and productive climate for occupants.
Although this technology can be built to custom specifications, the core principle remains the same. Air handlers draw in outdoor air and clean, heat or cool it, depending on the needs of a space. Conditioned air is supplied to where it is needed, and stale air is extracted while heat is recovered.
Treated fresh air units (TFAs) serve a similar purpose to AHUs, however, there are key differences in this technology.
A TFA uses 100% fresh air, never recirculating existing inside air to regulate conditions. While air quality is maximised, this process requires more energy to operate. An AHU, on the other hand, harnesses heat recovery ventilation to maximise efficiency and economy.
Although commercial air handlers represent one of the most energy efficient methods of whole-building climate control, it is important to select the right type and size of AHU for the best energy savings.
