Extreme summer heat in the Paris region requires energy- and cost-efficient cooling

A large, multinational retailer based in France runs a warehouse in the north of the Paris region. The warehouse is a 90% automated facility. However, a 500 m² area dedicated to stationary staff faced challenging thermal conditions, particularly with extreme heat during summer months. The environment required a solution that would enhance user comfort and efficiency while minimising maintenance and noise levels.

Step 1: Temporary relief with mobile cooling

Initially, the retailer, specialised in home improvement and gardening, turned to mobile adiabatic cooling equipment provided by Dantherm Group. These units delivered temporary relief, improving comfort during the summer heat. However, after two years, they sought a more permanent and efficient solution to better address their needs.

Step 2: Fixed evaporative cooling solution

To meet the customer’s evolving requirements, Dantherm Group conducted a thorough analysis of the warehouse conditions and developed a custom cooling project. The installation was executed in partnership with Climat sur Mesure, a trusted expert and partner in climate control solutions.

In March 2024, three BIO 30 evaporative cooling units with indoor diffusers were installed, ensuring even distribution of cooled air across the 500 m² area. This solution was specifically designed to maximise comfort, thermal efficiency, and operational simplicity.

An evaporative cooler is a simple solution that cools air by harnessing the natural process of evaporation. The efficiency of evaporative cooling makes it exceptionally suited to larger spaces that may cost much more to cool using a traditional air-conditioning unit. They typically use just 10% of the energy used by a traditional air-conditioning unit. One of the key benefits of evaporative cooling is the clean air the process generates. It renews indoor air quality, removing pollutants, odours and virus particles as it cools. It replaces stale air with 100% fresh air from the outside.

Evaporative coolers create a constant flow of natural, fresh, cool air indoors. This helps keep the climate at a comfortable, controlled level for all occupants, requiring only water and electricity to do so. The technology is equally effective whether doors and windows are open or closed, which makes it ideal for warehouses and factories.

On the hottest days of the year, when the need for cool air is at its greatest, the performance of evaporative coolers rises, typically reducing 30 °C to comfortable 21 °C indoor.

The new cooling system delivered significant improvements:
