Do evaporative coolers increase the risk of legionella? And can I use it if I work in the steel industry? This article offers our response to the most frequently asked questions about evaporative cooling.

Question 1:

Do evaporative coolers increase the risk of infections and other health problems?


Answer: No, on the contrary! This question is usually based on the mistaken assumption that because evaporative coolers can result in a slight humidity increase, they also increase the risk of virus and bacterial and fungal growth. All of Master’s evaporative coolers pre-filter the air and many of them are fitted with UV light, thereby eliminating particles that can act as vehicles for bacteria and viruses. The positive effects of using evaporation are actually well established. In addition to supplying clean, fresh and filtered air, evaporative cooling uses less energy and is easier to maintain. And it does not require the use of harmful CFC gases – in contrast to many ACs. To further


Question 2:

I work with steel products, so I don’t want humidity in my working environment. Does that mean that evaporative cooling cannot be used?


Answer: Our evaporative coolers evaporate water, so humidity will increase between 2% and 5% depending on environment. To avoid excess humidity in your environment, there are some things you can do.

  • Increase ventilation (open doors and windows). The more ventilation the less humidity increase will take place
  • Monitor temperature and humidity to keep it at the right level at all times. Our evaporative coolers come standard with the capability to do that using the integrated control panel.

We often speak about spot cooling with portable coolers. This means that of a total area just a part will be cooled. Therefore, the total humidity effect will typically be much lower than the 2-5%. Also, keep in mind that the powerful evaporative coolers actually expel the hot and humid air from the building.



Question 3:

Does evaporative cooling increase the risk of legionella because it uses water?


Answer: Our coolers do not increase the risk on legionella in any way. Our coolers evaporate water, water is moving around at very low temperature and it is constantly moving. In addition, many of our units come standard with integrated UV light that just to be on the safe side. It is important to follow the manual regarding the maintenance for general hygiene, but risk of legionella is non-existing for evaporative coolers of this type.

Question 4:

Can the level of noise from evaporative coolers be reduced?


Answer: Sound is subjective, and the same sound will be interpreted differently from person to person. In our main markets, for instance industrial and automotive businesses, the importance of cooling effect by far exceeds that of sound reduction. Our coolers come with speed adjustment capabilities so you can reduce speed and thereby sound, if so required. The smaller the cooler, the lower the sound level. The sound level from our units is between 60 and 66dB.


Question 5:

What can I do to adapt the air flow to my requirements?


Answer: Similar to question 4 related to sound, in a factory hall, some may find the air flow disturbing enough to complain. People are different. Most of our coolers have louvers, so you can control the air pattern/direction. Other solutions are to lift the cooler to a higher place to ensure the air is not directed at people (cool air always moves downwards, so cooling is guaranteed with this solution too).


Question 6:

Why even bother spending money on comfort – cheaper just to make do without it, right?


Answer: Installation, operational and overall ownership costs are actually pretty limited, so in terms of usage, evaporative cooling constitutes a financially sound solution. Moreover, employees having to work in hot environments are exposed to heat stress – and this will affect safety and productivity alike. In contrast, working in a comfortable climate will improve their concentration and ability to work efficiently.
