Galgebakken near Copenhagen is Denmark’s largest residential renovation project, with a project value of EUR 175 million. The renovation began in 2022 and centres around fostering community and well-being, reflected in both individual housing units and the overall architectural design of the estate. The project includes 800 wall-mounted ventilation units.

Indoor climate as a top priority

The original 1973 buildings faced severe moisture and mould issues, forcing residents to vacate their homes. To address this, the project placed great emphasis on implementing correctly dimensioned and effective ventilation systems.

DP Ventilation responsible for all ventilation installations at Galgebakken, partnered with Dantherm to identify an innovative and energy-efficient solution that also meets strict environmental standards.

User-friendly and compact design

Maintaining Galgebakken’s unique architecture was vital, so the ventilation units had to remain discreet for residents yet easily accessible for technical personnel. While technical rooms often take up valuable kitchen or hallway space, the ventilation units here were compactly integrated into combination cabinets, maximising space for residents. Thanks to their compact design, technicians can access the units externally, allowing component and filter changes without disturbing residents. Filters only require annual replacement, compared to the typical quarterly interval, because of their larger surface area.

For DP Ventilation, the ability to use the same unit for both left- and right-side configurations was essential. Airflows can be electronically adjusted, providing flexibility during installation. Three different models were installed at Galgebakken, tailored to the size of each apartment and its ventilation needs. For spaces with limited room, the very compact RCV model fits seamlessly.

Ventilation models installed include the HCV 300 PRO, the HCV 400 PRO P2, and the RCV 320 P2.

All models feature automatic free cooling, which lowers indoor temperatures during evenings and nights. With Dantherm’s PC Tool, DP Ventilation can easily calibrate the units for optimal operation as residents move into their newly renovated homes. Each ventilation unit can also be remotely controlled via an app.

Testimonial quote

“We chose Dantherm’s ventilation units primarily for their excellent operational economy. Spare parts are easy to source, and components are simple to replace. Key control elements are compatible across most models and can be adjusted using Dantherm’s intuitive software. For us as an installation company, this ease of maintenance saves a significant amount of time with 800 units, benefitting both us and the client,” says Nhat Huynh, Service Manager, DP Ventilation.

Innovative products delivering energy efficiency and health benefits

The ventilation units are equipped with advanced features tailored for the Nordic climate:

  • In winter, heat recovery warms incoming fresh air, preventing cold drafts.
  • Automatic free cooling ensures comfortable temperatures by bringing in cool night air on warm days.
  • Demand-controlled ventilation with integrated humidity sensors reduces power consumption during periods of low ventilation needs.
  • Units can connect to kitchen hoods for improved extraction in cooking areas.

Sustainability and environmental declarations

Sustainability was a key driver for choosing renovation over demolition and guided the selection of building materials. Dantherm’s most widely used ventilation units carry Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to meet strict sustainability requirements.

What is an EPD?
An EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) documents the environmental characteristics of products, serving as an environmental product statement.

On 12 March 2024, several of Dantherm’s residential ventilation products received environmental declarations from EPD Denmark, an independent organisation that publishes product-specific environmental declarations for building materials in compliance with the European standard EN15804. EPD Denmark works towards a European harmonisation of verifiable documentation for the environmental performance of building products.

As part of an EPD declaration, a life cycle assessment (LCA) is conducted for the production process and the product itself. The EPD provides a summary of the LCA report.

The life cycle assessment of these ventilation units includes reduced packaging, unpainted galvanised surfaces, and compact shipping – four units per pallet – to minimise environmental impact and simplify on-site handling.

Through the comprehensive renovation of Galgebakken, built to the highest standards, 750 homes have been created where residents can once again thrive in a healthy indoor environment.
