Data centres and telecoms humidity control and drying solutions FAQs

Why is humidity control important in data centres and telecom facilities?

When the air inside data centres and telecom facilities is damp, moisture has a greater chance of infiltrating highly sensitive equipment, damaging circuit boards, corroding metal and ruining sockets. This can reduce the performance of technology or cause it to break down altogether.

On the opposite end of the scale, overly dry air increases the risk of electrostatic discharges occurring. These events generate significant heat and voltage – strong enough to melt, damage or outright destroy vital components.

To keep the technology you and your customers rely on operating normally, dedicated moisture control is essential.

What types of humidity control and drying solutions are used in data centres and telecom facilities?

To maintain optimal relative humidity (RH) levels in every corner of a data centre or telecom facility, a wide range of humidity control technologies can be used, such as:

  • Condensation dehumidifiers
  • Desiccant dehumidifiers
  • Industrial dryers

Remote humidity monitoring solutions are also frequently deployed, so operators can always keep an eye on the conditions inside their server rooms, data centres, telecom shelters and more.

As a trusted manufacturer with the capacity to supply all of these devices, talk to our experts to discuss the ideal solution for your needs.

How do desiccant dehumidifiers differ from condensation dehumidifiers?

Desiccant and condensation dehumidifiers are the two most common dehumidifiers used by these sectors. And, while they are both effective at removing moisture from the air, they operate on slightly different processes.

Condensation systems work by drawing humid air across a refrigerated coil. As the air is rapidly cooled below its dew point, water vapour condenses and is drained away. Using the heat energy recovered during this process, the cool and dry air is then reheated and returned to the room. This makes these units exceptionally efficient in mild and warm environments.

Adsorption dehumidifiers, on the other hand, force damp air across a silica gel rotor. As the desiccant material attracts unwanted moisture, the wet air is ducted out of the space while the dry air is pumped back in. As a result, these systems can achieve very low humidity levels, and operate efficiently in cooler temperatures.

What is the ideal humidity level for data centres and telecom facilities?

To avoid too much or too little moisture becoming an issue for a data centre or building, ASHRAE recommends keeping relative humidity between 50% and 70% at all times.

Can high humidity levels affect the performance of data centres and telecom equipment?

Yes. Extreme moisture levels can cause a range of problems for data centre and telecom equipment:

  • Circuit boards can moisten
  • Sockets and plugs can fail
  • Metal housing and server racks can rust
  • Electrostatic discharges can cause sensitive electronic devices to melt

This can result in technology performance plummeting, their operational life becoming shorter or systems breaking entirely – leading to catastrophic outcomes for your organisation.

Do you sell energy-efficient humidity control solutions?

Yes. At Dantherm Group, we use high-quality components and engineer the majority of our solutions in Europe to enhance the energy efficiency of the equipment we offer. Through this quality-first approach, we are proud to supply systems that pay for themselves through meaningful, long-term reductions in running costs.

How are humidity levels monitored in data centres and telecom facilities?

If you have telecom shelters, landing stations, data centres, and other facilities located far and wide, remote monitoring technology helps to ensure the climate on every one of your sites is safe and within acceptable levels.

Can I buy your data centre and telecom facility dehumidification solutions online?

We don’t make our adsorption or desiccant dehumidifiers for electronics available to purchase online to ensure that every system we design, manufacture and supply fits your exact requirements. By taking a consultative approach with a highly-trained expert, we make sure that you are only recommended equipment that meets your needs – and fulfils these in the most efficient, cost-effective way possible.

Across all of our products, VAT-registered companies can get a quote very quickly by pressing 'I want to buy' and inserting your enquiry and contact details.

How soon can you supply your telecom and data centre humidity control?

This varies on a case-by-case basis. For some standard products, accessories and consumables, we can provide day-to-day delivery. For larger orders or more bespoke dehumidifiers, there may be a longer lead time.

By reaching out to our experts we can put you in touch with your nearest local supplier so you can receive the products you require in the most timely manner possible.

Do you sell your dehumidifiers for the data and telecom sector to private consumers?

No. Dantherm Group’s range of solutions for environmental stability in telecom and data facilities are sold only to industry professionals directly from our offices, or via our extensive network of distributors.

What support do you offer for your data centre and telecom dryers?

With offices, servicing partners and spare parts suppliers distributed across Europe, we can rapidly respond to any request or issue involving your products. You can learn more about our servicing and spare parts services on our website.

Our professionals are also happy to advise on the most effective way to set up and operate your equipment, so you always get the maximum performance and value from your products.
